TURKANA
on the News
|
TURKANA was established in Columbus (Ohio) in the Fall of 1997. The band is comprised of Turkish and American musicians who perform Turkish music. The band's goal is to introduce Turkish music to American and international audiences in the United States. The band includes eight members who play acoustic instruments including violin, clarinet, acoustic and classic guitar, Middle Eastern drums, kaval (a wind instrument played in Turkey and Balkan countries), and the Turkish folk instrument saz, a long-necked lute. TURKANA performs its own compositions as well as music that are popular in Turkey. The rhythms and melodies in TURKANA's recently released premier compact disk, Keyfim Yerinde, reflect the richness and diversity of musical life in Turkey today. TURKANA has been and is being broadcasted by local NPR stations. The group has given concerts in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Athens and Columbus. |
